US Women's National Team

With the unabashed failure of the US Men's National Team to qualify for the 2018 World Cup, we can at least take solace in the fact that the US Women's National Team is, and has been, the class of the Women's soccer world for the last umpteen years.  I'm incredibly lucky to have an amazing wife, and it just so happens that she adores soccer.  She was quite good until a series of ACL injuries derailed her career.  So now, in addition to recreational play, we live vicariously through the USWNT.  We have gone to, and have ticket to go to several games, which are always a great time and a fun atmosphere.

Back in 2014, I thought it would be a cool gift to my wife for finishing her professional training if I took her to the Women's World Cup final in Vancouver, Canada.  Growing up in Seattle, I had been to Vancouver many times and loved the city.  My wife had never been, but it seemed like a great idea.  We entered the ticket lottery nearly a year before the actual tournament, and were lucky enough to get decent seats.  The draws hadn't even been announced yet, and we had to buy half-season passes to Winnipeg or somesuch, which we couldn't even give away.  Nevertheless, our wildest dreams were answered and the United States ended up meeting Japan for the World Cup Final.

The city of Vancouver was tremendous, and the people were just as kind and welcoming as I remembered.  We met up with some friends and were able to go to the USWNT official pregame party with the families of the players.  It was a total blast, and we had a great time.  We arrived at the game so early that it was like we were on an international flight.  The game itself was amazing, and Carli Lloyd was dominating.  Even though I wanted Japan to do a little better, the result was what we desired, and the experience was all that we could have possibly asked for.

I ended up doing a shadow box frame with our tickets, an official picture from the USWNT pregame party, and a PSA/DNA signed photo of the most of the team for my wife as a commemorative of our trip and the World Cup win.  Add another star to the jersey.
