US Women's National Team Part 3
The United States National Teams (both Men's and Women's) have friendlies all over the world, but often in the United States. It just so happened that on April 8, 2018, they were playing Mexico at BBVA Compass Stadium, home of the Dash and Dynamo, in Houston. This worked out perfectly for us, and we got some sweet tickets seven rows up only 5 yards off the centerline. I have to admit that it was a bit chilly for Houston in April, and we had to wear jackets and jeans, but the game was electric.
One of the unique things about this game was that Carli Lloyd, the captain and heartbeat of the USWNT for the last several years, was sitting at 99 career international goals with the USWNT. This game provided a good opportunity for her to reach 100, and reach 100 she did. It was a pretty neat thing to be a part of.
The other fun thing was that as members of the USA Soccer Supports Club, we were invited into the members lounge pre-game. I thought it would be pretty lame, but it was actually kind of nice. I had never been in a party suite at the soccer stadium before, and they had a ton of baked goods, snacks, and all the water and soda you wanted. It was also filled with like-minded fans, and it was a nice way to start the game. Kudos to the organizers who made it just a little more special.
The USA beat Mexico 6-2, Carli Lloyd got her #100 goal, Mallory Pugh got one, and Alex Morgan had two goals with two great chances at completing the hat trick. She didn't, and I wasn't too upset since I really do like my USA Soccer hat. Looking forward to the next one, the 2019 Women's World Cup, and hopefully the Canada / USA / Mexico combined bid for the 2026 World Cup.
