The Ugliest Coolest Card Ever?
So I collect University of Washington players, and it turns out that UW has produced some pretty good professionals. Spencer Hawes was a great college player and a decent pro basketball player, but before all of this, he was a McDonald's All American. And when he played in that game, he wore one of those fantastic mustard yellow, ketchup red, and white McDonald's-colored All American jerseys. And somehow, Topps thought it would be a good idea to make these jerseys into a card. Seems like a good concept, really. A pretty awesome addition once the players hit the pros?
The card has huge McDonald's Logos all over it, a sticker autograph with the golden arches in the background, and a god awful logo slashed right over the patch. But oh, what a patch. A huge jumbo multi-break, angled patch that was All-American Game-Used in it. And a bright and bold autograph! And even a little mugshot of Spencer that is almost as big as one of McDonald's Logos. Honestly, the concept was really neat, but the design. Oh man. I love the card because of what it is, but I don't really hope anything else like this ever gets produced. What could have been?
